Regularly 10.99/On Sale for $8.96
Bodegas Aragonesas is located in the “Garnacha Belt” of Campo de Borja DO, with vineyards in the foothills of the Cordillero Iberico, south of Rioja. These occupy an area of 10,000 acres, with elevations between 1,300 and 1,475 feet on a formation of small hills facing southeast. Another 10,000 acres is planted to olive and almond trees, with 10,000 remaining open land or forest. Garnacha (grenache) is the predominant varietal grown, with 20% Tempranillo and lesser amounts of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay
Although Aragonesas was founded in 1984, the cultivation of the vines - particularly Garnacha - began no later than 1145 CE by the Cistercian monks of the Monastery of Veruela, located a short distance from Fuendejalon and Magallon.
The extremely dry, hot climate and stark contrast between day and night time temperatures are ideal for making fruity, aromatic wines from the late ripening variety of Garnacha. Many of the winery’s vineyards were planted over a century ago and produce very low yields of ripe, concentrated fruit.
Winemaker Javier Vela heads up a cooperative effort by farmers from the towns of Magallón and Fuendejalón. Together, they represent 65% of the total production from this appellation.
This Spanish quaffer is the perfect everyday wine. Try one both with and without food and see if you don’t want to tuck away at least half a case as a house red.
50% Garnacha, 50% Tempranillo
