Abbey Tripel Brewed with Apricots and Peaches

It’s been ten years since childhood friends Eric McKay and Patrick Murtaugh started Hardywood Craft Brewery. When they started, only Legend Brewing Company was making beer in Richmond. Now, Hardywood is an elder brewer among a truly impressive RVA craft scene. However, time has neither dimmed Hardywood’s place in our hearts nor on our palettes.

The Hardywood Peach Tripel is one of their perennial offerings. For it, Hardywood takes their abbey Tripel and referments it on a bed of apricots and Virginia peaches. (Hardywood is dedicated to brewing with local ingredients.) What makes this brew stand out is how subtle the tastes are. Where you’d expect a sweet Peach cordial what you get are light fruit notes woven into a bone dry Tripel. In fact, you could almost describe the beer as tart (probably a result of the apricots). Fans of sour beers like Goses and Berliner Weisses should give this beer a try. (Everyone else should try it as well.)

Unfiltered Double IPA

Brooklyn doubles down on your Sabro love for this dry, unfiltered, single-hop DIPA. Pitched as an aroma hop, Sabro — when doing the bitter lifting — gives off a sort of a minty, creamy, coconut vibe. (Good thing it’s not sweet or you would need a beach and a tiny umbrella in your glass).
