It would be unfair to feature South Africa’s Remhoogte Chenin Blanc (as we continue to do for another week) without shining light as well on their justly famous Soaring Eagle Red Blend.

Remhoogte, which means “Braking Heights,” has been located on steep south and southwest facing slopes in Stellenbosch since 1812. Juliet and Murray Boustred purchased the property in 1994 and began producing wine for sale to other vineyards. After several years of collaboration with renowned French oenologist Michel Rolland, the Boustreds gained the confidence to begin making their own high-quality wines. Son Chris spent time working at Hartwell Vineyards in Australia and Stags Leap in Napa Valley before returning to take over the winemaking duties in 2007.

The complex Remhoogte soils are over 250 million years old, some of the oldest of any wine region in the world, resulting in wines rich in character and authenticity with a unique sense of place.

Attention to detail begins in the vineyard where grapes are first sorted, and then in the cellar where they are sorted again, twice. The resulting, carefully curated blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz spends 24 months in French oak, allowing it to mellow into a supremely drinkable red.

Remhoogte is fully committed to sustainability, having set aside 30% of the estate and populated it with the Western Cape’s indigenous flora and fauna. From the family terrace, one can look across the valley at zebras, wildebeest, and deer.
