A Very Special Wine of the Week!
This time of year, we normally look for fun, fresh wines that are light on the palate and on the pocketbook. However, we are always on the lookout for excellent deals on excellent wines to feature, which is why we could not resist this deal on one of our favorite white wines in the shop. If you were feeling like a tiny splurge on a gorgeous wine, here’s your opportunity!
Weingut Höllerer is a close-knit family business that has been making wine in Kamptal since 1808. The winery is situated in the village of Engabrunn (pop. 528), The Kamptal is a geographically small region on the slopes of the Kamp river (Tal means valley) but is the third-largest in Austria in terms of wine produced. The steepness of the slopes here and the fact that the rows of vines are so narrowly spaced means hand harvesting is mandatory. Nevertheless, current generation winemaker Alois Höllerer harvests in several passes rather than all at once to ensure the highest quality of grapes.
Regular customers know of our fondness for Grüner Veltliner; a fondness born of its extraordinary flexibility as a grape, and its compatibility with a host of foods. The Höllerer Alte Reben (old vines) is a wine that shows Grüner can be a serious, layered wine, while still keeping its freshness and friendliness. It’s elegant and delicious, and what better way to close out the often inelegant month of January!
Weather and other factors mean that this week’s Wine of the Week will arrive on Wednesday, but put in your orders now!
