Beer of the Week! 01/11/22
Denizens Southside IPA
Regularly $12.99 / Now on Sale for $11.96
Unfiltered Rye IPA
These days few people think of when the hurdles to the making of craft beer were other than brewing related. However, long before concerns of over-saturation, antiquated laws had craft brewers worrying about whether they could even exist. Well, a few years ago when the rest of us were learning what Goses were, those times persisted in Silver Spring, MD.
In 2012, ancient and evil laws held over from (wait for it … ) Prohibition made it near impossible to be a brew business in Silver Spring. However Jeff Ramirez, Julie Verratti, and Emily Bruno were determined to fix that sad situation. By 2014, Denizens Brewing Company was pouring pints as the first production brewery in Montgomery County. In 2019, they were able to build a second brewing facility in Riverdale Park, allowing them to spread their home town goodness throughout MD, DC, and NoVA. Now, they have trickled down to our little burg, and we, for one, are quite pleased.
Denizen’s Southside IPA is one of two year-round IPAs for them. It’s unfiltered, as is the norm these days, but what makes it stand out is the fact that it’s a Rye IPA. The Rye gives and extra dimension to the malt backbone that pushes the citrus/fruit of the Simcoe and Azacca hops into a new light as they, in turn, shave off the harsh edges that rye can produce. We can’t remember when we’ve seen rye used so effectively. It’s smart, tasty brewing. This is the third beer of theirs that we’ve gotten and we’re excited to try more! (Make sure to check out their Third Party Tripel if you want to see what else Denizen can do.)
Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause we’re doing “Try” January.)
Aslin Trite IPA
Regularly $13.99 / Now on Sale for $12.96
New England Style IPA
Herndon’s Aslin Beer Company first released their Trite IPA in the fall of 2020. Now winter of 2022, it’s back to grace our shelves and to tickle our palates.
It’s dry and hazy with Citra and Simcoe hops. Although both of those hops are citrus powerhouses, Aslin manages to get a little juiciness out of them managing a tart pineapple for the Trite. Light-bodied but smooth and creamy due to the addition of oats in the malt bill, the Trite is a poorly named beer as it is anything but.
