English Style Barleywine

So there are two types of Barleywines. There’s the English style, from where barleywines originated, and there’s the American style — like the English style but much hoppier (surprise, surprise). Of course, both are strong beers, and both can be aged. (Good luck disciplining yourself to wait that long ;P. ) Every year, Sterling, VA’s Beltway Brewing Company makes this English Style Barleywine — Art in Execution — as their anniversary ale. Here’s what they say about it …

“Art in Execution 2019 is Beltway Brewing Company’s bold and traditional Barleywine Style Ale. An ale of distinction and strength that is brewed to be enjoyed now (to experience the bold, malt forward flavors) or to be cellared for a year or more (to appreciate the warming and elegant notes of Madeira that are sure to develop with age). Art in Execution 2019 has a rich and almost creamy mouthfeel with notes of stone fruit and toffee and a lingering malt forward finish that is sure to warm you up on a cool evening. It is Beltway Brewing Company’s 6th Anniversary Ale and we are ALL proud to offer this most distinctive beer to you. Art in Execution 2019 – Barleywine Style Ale: Beltway Brewing Company’s liquid poem to the glory of malt.”

“Liquid poem to the glory of malt” — we like that. This particular poem is woven through with images of toasted caramel and molasses with an ironic twist of hops at the end. (The colder you have it, the more those hops will come out.) A versatile work, you could “read it” with your dessert or with your burger. Hm … all this poetry is making us both hungry and thirsty.
