Beer of the Week! 11/15/22
Starr Hill Snow Blind
Regularly $12.99 / Now on Sale for $11.96
Doppelbock Style Lager
If you’re a strict beer traditionalist (and aren’t we all?), then Doppelbocks are beers for late winter going into spring (specifically Lent). However, Starr Hill releases this Doppelbock style lager every year to be its winter seasonal. What can we say? Beer Traditionalism is for drinkers, not brewers.
What makes the Snow Blind stand out among Doppelbocks is that it delivers the Bock goods without forgetting it’s a lager. You’ve got the moderate sweetness and rich caramel notes of a full-bodied beer with a lager’s light body.
By the way, you know how Starr Hill has the whole, Rock theme with their beers, right? Well, the Snow Blind is named after the Black Sabbath song of the same name and not the Styx song. No Beer Traditionalism and dissing Styx for Sabbath? Starr Hill, you keep breaking our hearts … and then making up to us with your beers.
Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause we’re gonna rock down to Beer-lectric Avenue. And then we’ll take it higher.)
Lickinghole Creek Something G.O.A.T.
Regularly $15.99 / Now on Sale for $14.96
New England Style IPA
Lickinghole Creek Farm Brewery in Goochland — Virginia’s first farm brewery — started their “Something” series in 2018 (we think) with the Something Royal. With that beer they set the tone and their formula right from the start — a New England Style IPA with a label featuring an animal mixed into the face card of a playing card. No surprise that the Something G.O.A.T. features a goat, however, it also plays off of the current slang that holds “G.O.A.T.” as an acronym for “Greatest of All Time …”
(… a piece of slang that is either brazenly ignorant of or blithely unconcerned with “goat’s” LONG history of ALMOST OPPOSITE meanings as in “the hero or the goat” — the person who’s blamed for blowing something for the rest of us. But whatever. It’s all good. We’re fine with whatever the kids are saying as they refuse to get off our lawns.)
Lickinghole Creek asks if their current hop combination is the greatest juicy hop combo of all time. We’re talking Mosaic, Galaxy, and Citra hops. That’s kind of an all-winners squad right there, and they definitely deliver. The Something G.O.A.T. gives us nectarine on the nose that moves into the palate. Most of the brew, though, gives you oranges — not as in orange juice but like a slice of orange, where you get that fresh juice burst mixed with a little zest from the rind. It’s a simple hop profile but so juicy. We don’t know if this NEIPA is the greatest, but it certainly doesn’t get our goat. (See!!!)
