Ten Bends Sole Shine: Nelson Sauvin Single Hop

Regularly $16.99 / Now on Sale for $15.96
Single Hop Hazy American Pale Ale

Hyde Park, VT is so far north that if you ran a double marathon northward you’d cross the finish line in Quebec. It’s so far north, townspeople vacation in Portland, ME when they want southern exposure. It’s so far north that Google’s default picture for it is the public library surrounded by snow (… and it’s August!). (Not really.) Oh, well. All the easier to keep your beer cold.

Ten Bends Beer in Hyde Park, VT uses its Sole Shine series to explore the characteristics of individual hops by making single hop hazy American Pale Ales. Currently, we have their iteration with Nelson Sauvin hops. Nelson Sauvin is a New Zealand hop so called because it produces aromas and flavors reminiscent of one of New Zealand’s favorite grapes, Sauvignon Blanc. It can produce strong fruity and berry flavors and is useful both as a bittering hop and an aroma hop.

This Sole Shine shows Nelson Sauvin’s complexity with a beguiling play of fruit and citrus notes. It’s a combination of a mild sweetness and a zesty tartness. In fact, at 6.2% ABV, we’re not really sure why Ten Bends characterizes their Sole Shine as an APA when they could just as easily present this blend of juice and citrus as an NEIPA. Oh, well. Call it what you want as long as it tastes this good.

The Bruery Goses Are Red

Regularly $14.99 / Now on Sale for $13.96
Foeder Aged Gose Style Ale Brewed with Syrah Grapes

When we first ran into beers from the Bruery they were dedicated to brewing Belgian styles. Now, the Brothers Rue from Palentia, CA say they care more about pursuing particular flavors than specific styles. Here is what they say about their Goses Are Red Gose.

“This is a rosé - and a gose - by any other name. Goses are Red is a stylish funky, crisp and tart gose ale inspired by the soft sweetness of a rosé wine. The refreshing wheat-based ale begins with some of the qualities you’d expect from a gose, including coriander spicing and a light saltiness to complement the tartness imparted by our house cultures. But the story doesn’t end there - it builds in complexity, thanks to time spent in an oak foeder and the addition of grapes, which impart a refreshing character and color.”

What can we add to that other than “Goses Are Red” — cutest Gose name ever!
