Spotlight on the 3 Floyds Pillar of Beasts
$24.99 for the four-pack 12oz bottles
Bourbon Barrel-Aged Barleywine Style Ale
Brewed with Salted Caramel, Vanilla Beans, and Cocoa Nibs
It can be hard selling 3 Floyds beer. Even though their beer is consistently good, their names and the their label art can create a rather … intense effect. Even this Bourbon Barrel-Aged Barleywine’s label features a higher number of monster images than usual. It also sports an imposing name — Pillar of Beasts, which is ironic because this brew is such a comfortable beer.
The first thing you get, floating above the fruit notes of the Barleywine, is the taste of caramel with notes of hazelnut. The cocoa nibs come in adding just a tinge of bitterness that, with the salt, reins in the sweetness before it goes crazy. The whole thing comes across as a grown up, fancy, saltwater taffy.
Even though it comes out of Munster, IN (part of southeastern greater Chicago), the Pillar of Beasts will make you feel like you’re strolling with a friend on an Atlantic boardwalk.
