Beer of the Week! 05/17/22
Elder Pine Richtig
Regularly $15.99/ Now on Sale for $14.96
German Style Pilsner
According to the font of all modern knowledge, Google, “richtig” in German means “right” or “proper” or “correct.” So, although Gaithersburg, MD’s Elder Pine Brewing & Blending Company may be saying that they have brewed “a proper Pilsner,” we like to imagine them pretending to be hip by saying that they have “come correct” with their latest release. Whichever is their intended communication, it’s a shame that there isn’t a German word for “too legit to sip!” (Of course, with German, there might be.)
To make the Richtig, Elder Pine uses heirloom barley that was grown and malted in Germany. They then hop this lovely lager with Tettnang hops, also from Germany. Just when you’re thinking, “Heck, why didn’t they just brew the thing in Germany,” you taste it and see what they’ve done with those ingredients.
The Richtig is one of the mellowest Pilsners you’ll taste, in a good way. They’ve layered the hops into malt in such a way that you don’t get that Pilsner “crispness,” but you still get that classic Pilsner taste. Also, there’s an added depth to the malt backbone of this beer that is absent from cleaner Pilsners. It’s enough to make you slap Anheuser Busch in the face and say, “This! This is what we should’ve been drinking all these years!” (Of course, you could probably do that with any craft beer.)
Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause one is only for the money, but two? Ah, two is for the show!)
Denizens Macadocious Maibock
Regularly $12.99 / Now on Sale for $11.96
Maibock Style Lager
It’s the merry month of May, and as we write these notes it is alternately clear and pouring! What better time to have a Maibock! (Really, for us there’s never a bad time.) Fortunately Denizens in Silver Spring, MD has us covered.
Bocks are sweet, dark German lagers with the Maibock being the lightest member of the family … which isn’t saying much. Keep in mind that May in Bavaria is not far away from last thaw. It’s still cool outside, so while they’re not still punching at their winter weight, they want a beer with a little oomph in it.
The Macadocious Maibock uses traditional Maibock ingredients imparting a bready malt sweetness to the beer. However, instead of the usual Noble Hop suspects, Denizens uses Huell Melon hops — a relatively new German hop that features floral and even berry notes in its beers. Look for the Huell Melon to offer an additional brightness to the Macadocious flavor profile. It’s consistent tastiness is welcome company as you watch VA’s ever changing weather.
