Cider Spotlight!
Lost Boy Ciders
Unfiltered, Unpasteurized, No Sugar Added, Dry Virginia Ciders
In 2015, DC resident Tristan Wright was sick, really sick, in the hospital sick. Finally, his doctors identified severe allergies to gluten and soy. Wright’s whole diet had to change. Among those changes was Wright’s abandonment of two old friends, beer and whiskey. During his journey back towards health, Wright remembered a trip to Ireland from years before where he, his wife, and a stag party full of guys spent the night drinking cider and singing Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston songs. (They believe the children are our future, you see.) With that memory, a return to alcohol and its social interactions were in Wright’s grasp. A few years later, Lost Boy Cider in Alexandria, VA was born.
Lost Boy Cider is dedicated to making tasty ciders. Their ciders are all unfiltered and unpasteurized and based on apples from Virginia orchards. (Did you know that Virginia is the seventh largest apple-growing state?) We’ve known about Lost Boy Cider for a long time and have finally brought some into our store. They do not disappoint!
Lost Boy Comeback Kid
Unfiltered Hard Apple Cider
$18.99 for the six-pack 12oz cans
This cider is Lost Boy’s baseline cider. Named for Wright himself, it’s just apples, water, and yeast. Boy, though, what a flavor they pull out of those ingredients! It also has the roundness that you would expect from a barrel-aged cider without having seen barrels (as far as we know). For those of you who like a little sweetness to your cider, there’s so much going on here that you won’t mind how dry it is. It’s no surprise, then, that the Comeback Kid took home a gold metal in the 2021 Virginia Governor’s Cup as well as winning Best in Show for cider.
Lost Boy Pura Vida
Unfiltered Hard Apple Cider with Pineapple
$19.99 for the six-pack 12oz cans
Apparently, the inspiration for the Pura Vida came from a trip to Costa Rica. (Did you know that the pineapple is indigenous to South America and not Hawaii or other southern Pacific islands? In fact the overwhelming majority of pineapples sold worldwide are grown in … wait for it … Costa Rica!) (We know!) The Lost Boy people loved the Costa Rican fresh fruit so much, they wanted to bring the taste back to a cider.
Though boasting pineapple both on the nose and on the palate, the Pura Vida remains a dry cider, giving you the unique opportunity to taste pineapple without its sweetness. Turns out … it’s still good. Lost Boy blends the pineapple and apple flavors to produce a cider that’s ideal for summer sipping.
