Beer of the Week! 05/31/22

Zero Gravity I’m a Radio

Regularly $12.99 / Now on Sale for $11.96
Hazy IPA

From Burlington, VT, Zero Gravity Craft Brewery’s I’m a Radio has been a fun challenge to make sense of. It seems to be, at least in part, a story of three hops.

First there’s the Big Hop on Campus, Mosaic. Mosaic is prized for its tropical fruit characteristics, but it can also impart citrus flavors to its beers.

Next you have Idaho 7, a hop developed just outside of Boise. Sporting an herbal character, Idaho 7 leans more to the zesty citrus side. Think tangerine.

Finally, you have Loral hops — a hop we’ve never heard of before. Called a “super noble hop,” Loral (as we understand it) is primarily regarded as an aroma hop. It can give off both floral and herbal notes. Our bet is that Zero Gravity used Loral for dry-hopping.

Why did we stumble into the weeds with our admittedly minuscule brewing knowledge? ‘Cause each of us tasted different things in this beer. Some of us got the tropical fruit and floral notes. Some of us got zesty citrus and herbality. Don’t get us wrong; we all liked it. It’s well-balanced, dry, light-bodied, and complex. It seems like an IPA that you’d want to quaff, but it’s really one that’s well worth sipping and spending some time with.

Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause when Pride goeth before the fall, Imbibe should come after, y’all.)

Great Divide Orabelle

Regularly $13.99 / Now on Sale for $12.96
Tripel with Oats, Rye, and Spices

In their Orabelle Belgian Style Ale, Great Divide Brewing Company in Denver, CO messes with the Tripel style, fattening it out with some extra ingredients.

The messing around starts right at the beginning of the brewing process with the malt. Along with the barley malt, Great Divide adds in wheat, oats, and rye. They then subject this trio to two yeast strains for fermentation. They finish off the taste with orange peel and “a dash” of coriander.

The blend is really seamless. You’re not likely to catch these different parts unless you go looking for them. More than likely you’ll just be confronted by a tasty Tripel that has more than usual going on. It’s like a new car, where you could look under the hood, but it purrs so pleasantly you just want to enjoy the ride.
