Mustang Sally Maggie
Regularly $14.99 / Now on Sale for $13.96
New England Style IPA
If you weren’t in Chantilly, VA two Saturdays ago, then you probably missed Simpson’s Trivia Night at Mustang Sally Brewing Company. We can’t turn back the clock to let you show off your impressive knowledge of Krusty the Clown’s Sideshow sidekicks, but we can offer you Mustang Sally’s latest IPA from their Halo Series — named in homage to Springfield’s favorite pacifier sucking baby.
(I will not violate a registered copyright. I will not violate a registered copyright. I will not violate a registered copyright. I will not violate a registered copyright …)
Some time ago, Mustang Sally brewed an IPA that they called the Halo, making it one of their core beers. They have since retired that beer but have repurposed the name. Rather than have a core IPA, they have a rotating hazy IPA series which they call their “Halo Series.” Their latest is the Maggie.
Maggie is a New England Style IPA that does what fewer NEIPAs do these days — it dares to be juicy. Brewed with Amarillo, El Dorado, and Mosaic hops sitting on an off-dry malt base, the Maggie serves up the tropical fruit flavors with a touch of citrus at the end like a baby’s first word uttered at the end of an episode when no one else is in the room. (Who voiced Maggie? Ooo! We know that one!)
Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause you know how it is. You start that first beer and you think, “This brew shall pass.”)
Epic Los Locos
Regularly $13.99 / Now on Sale for $12.96
Mexican Style Lager with Lime and Sea Salt
In truth, the “Mexican Style Lager” isn’t just one thing. There are a few styles of Mexican Lagers. After all, all they are are Mexican brewers making beers based on the lagers that 19th Century German immigrants introduced to the country. So, you see a similar variety. There are dark lagers (like Modelo Negra), Vienna Lagers (like Dos Equis XX Amber), light lagers (like Corona), and even Pilsner-like lagers (like Pacifico). Salt Lake City’s Epic Brewing Company has chosen to model the light lager style.
The Los Locos is clear and golden in the glass from the Weyerman Pilsner and Carapils malt. Epic also adds in yellow corn — flaked maize being a popular Mexican additive. Lightly hopping the brew with Amarillo hops, Epic apes Mexican practice again by adding in lime juice and salt (sea salt to be exact, ‘cause they’re fancy!).
The resultant brew is clean and smooth. The lime adds a welcome level of depth to the flavor profile with the salt slowly building as you go through the glass — a bit of fun for fans of the Gose taste. For the most part, though, the salt contributes more to the beer’s “Refresh Factor” than to its main flavor profile.
So, if you’re heading off to a picnic or the beach, no need to worry about bringing enough limes for both your beer and your margaritas. Epic has you covered.
