Southern Tier Pumking

$14.99 for the 12oz bottle four-pack
Imperial Pumpkin Ale

Lakewood NY’s Southern Tier Brewing Company first released their Imperial Pumpkin Ale, the Pumking, in 2007. Since then, it has lived up to its name. If you just have one pumpkin ale this year … but why would you have just one pumpkin ale. Okay, if someone is forcing you at gunpoint to only have one pumpkin ale this year, consider making the Pumking your one shot … so to speak.

The Pumking uses two malts, two hops, real pumpkin, and cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and cloves. Phin DeMink, Southern Tier’s founder has always been a fan of big beers, and where we constantly extoll the virtues of brewers who can mix ingredients with a delicate touch, it’s also good to see someone who can do big, bold beers well. The world is a wide beer fridge with room for many kinds.

After all these years, the Pumking remains one of the finest pumpkin ales. Though people talk about it being “pumpkin pie in a glass,” for us its strength is that it walks just up to being that and then regally stops and waits for its retainers to set up camp right where it chooses to be. There’s a good reason why we keep coming back to this beer year after year. This king can live a long time as far as we’re concerned.
