Beer of the Week! 10/23/23

Charles Towne Fermantory Beagle Lander

Normally $17.99 / Now on Sale for $16.96
American Style Pale Ale Brewed with Spelt

Ah! We do love a good American style Pale Ale. We also love a good beer brewed with spelt. Imagine our joy when we saw Charleston, SC’s Charles Towne Fermantory offering up both in the same brew!

Spelt is an ancient heirloom wheat strain originating in the Fertile Crescent. The Sumerians most likely fermented it to make their version of beer. Spelt gives you that wheat taste with an added nuttiness and acid tang — almost like light rye notes.

With the Beagle Lander, once Charles Towne lets loose the notches on its spelt belt, it comes in and hops it with Mosaic, Motueka, and Cashmere. What more do you want? (Oh, you want to know how it all comes together? Okay. We can tell you that …)

Light-bodied and unfiltered, the Beagle Lander sees the spelt fold into the hops, which do their tropical duty — passionfruit, guava, and persimmon notes abound. The blend is so strong that this brew is the most gestalty beer we’ve had in a while. It’s hard to tell where one flavor ends and the other one begins. Fortunately, it’s terribly satisfying just to sit back and enjoy the entire package.

Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause every little bit counts.)

Casita The Singularity: El Dorado

Normally $19.99 / Now on Sale for $18.96
Single Hop Hazy IPA

We seem to be finding a bunch of single-hop IPAs these days, and we’re fans, especially when they feature hops that usually sing backup. Don’t get us wrong, we’ll always line up for your Mosaic, Cascade, or Citra solos, but how are we going to expand our hop appreciation without deep dives into the hops that don’t often take the spotlight … like El Dorado?

El Dorado is a dual purpose hop that adds both tropical aromas and flavors to beer. Though we associate these hop characteristics with Australian and New Zealand hops, El Dorado was developed in Washington State’s Yakima Valley — by CLS Farms, a fifth generation family-owned farm that grows fruit (organically) and hops. CLS originally released El Dorado in 2010, and craft brewers have been using it since.

In this version of Casita’s Singularity series (from Wilson, NC), El Dorado comes across as the juicy love child of Simcoe and Strata. There’s a touch of herbalness around the edges of the pineapple / berry fruit notes. It’s easy to see why this hop has found its way into so many New England Style IPAs.
