Beer of the Week! 04/04/23

Lone Pine Brewing Company

Friends since high school, John Paul and Tom Madden (both having names that sound like they should belong to other people) started Lone Pine Brewing Company in 2016 in Portland, Maine. Two years later they were building an expanded production facility, and the Brewer’s Association was calling them the fourth fastest growing beer company in the nation. Now, growth is not always a good thing, but Lone Pine’s growth doesn’t seem to have hurt them yet. They haven’t folded, and they put out good beer.

Lone Pine Brightside IPA

Regularly $15.99 / Now on Sale for $14.96
Hazy IPA

Lone Pine says that the Brightside IPA is “a euphoria of hops,” and boy they are not kidding! On top of a malt base of 2-Row, Munich 20L, and Carapils malts, Lone Pine throws in Centennial, Falconer’s Flight, Simcoe, and Idaho 7 hops. (Yeah, man!)

You get a flare of melon right up front, but then that flavor is immediately muscled aside by a gang of grapefruit and pine.

Lone Pine pitches this IPA as a hybrid of West Coast and New England styles, and we think they’ve nailed it.

Bonus Beer of the Week (‘Cause you’re not the boss of us … beer is!)

Lone Pine Oh-J

Regularly $16.99 / Now on Sale for $15.96
Double New England Style IPA

So, the Lone Pine Oh-J is all about the juiciness. (We’d say it’s kinda like being all about that bass, but we don’t want to get into treble. ;P ) However, where the traditional NEIPA pursues tropical fruit flavors in its juiciness, the Oh-J is a home for citrus. Maybe that’s why Lone Pine creates this Double New England Style IPA without using one Australian or New Zealand hop.

Centennial, Falconer’s Flight, and Amarillo hops sit on top of a base of 2-Row, Munich 20L, and Vienna malts. What Lone Pine coaxes out of this combination is soooo much orange flavor, and it’s more like satsuma oranges than a big, fat Mandarin orange. Plus, there’s a brisk zestiness that rounds off the finish.

Stand back while Lone Pine sets the juice loose.
