Beer of the Week! 04/11/2023

Wheatland Spring Waldnaab

Regularly $20.99 / Now on Sale for $18.96
Bernstein Lager (Amber Lager)

A Bernstein Lager is a Bavarian amber lager, similar to a Vienna Lager (or maybe it’s just another name for Vienna Lagers; we’ll admit that we’re not really sure). This one comes, of course, from the Waterford, VA lager mavens Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery. Recently, someone came in the store looking for a lager with some body to it. We led them directly to this baby.

The Waldnaab is all about balance. First, it immediately offers sweet malt, but those notes are quickly balanced by a toastiness. These malt characteristics are, in turn, balanced by an herbal bitterness from its noble hops.

It’s a common (and good) thing to go for a really clean and straightforward taste with your lagers. However, in the Waldnaab, Wheatland Spring opts for depth and complexity. Still, it remains a lager — full-bodied, yet just on the shy side of refreshing.

Alewerks Anywhere IPA

Regularly $11.99 / Now on Sale for $10.96
Hazy IPA

Here’s another IPA that bowls right down the middle of the lane in between West Coast Style and New England Style. It’s also another beer where Williamsburg’s Alewerks gets a strike.

Alewerks’ new Anywhere IPA offers you citrus on the nose and then follows it up in the glass. It has a dry malt base with hints of rye, or maybe that’s just the gestalt of the hop cocktail, which favors a tangerine and orange citrus profile that folds into a grapefruit zing.

This beer is typical of Alewerks, which seems to have the capacity to produce beers that are just yummy to drink. We don’t quite get the label, though. Is that what anywhere looks like? Maybe we just don’t get the name. Are there places you’re not supposed to drink IPAs? … like at that La Traviata gala performance, or under the waterfall in Maui for the renewal of our vows, or at grandma’s funeral — during grandma’s funeral (At least I poured out a bit for granny into her grave. I thought that was classy.), or at …
