Martin Mittelbach is the fifth generation of Mittlebachs to work Tegernseerhof, an estate that goes back a thousand years.

The name comes from the Tegernsee Abbey, which held the Benedictine monks who built the first facilities in 1176, and for centuries the monks made their wine there. The Austrian Empire acquired it in 19th century. After they lost it, it passed on to private owners, with the Mittelbachs taking it over in the 1970s.

Tegernseerhof owns about 57 hectares of vineyards, surrounded by indigenous plants, and planted in rows of stone terraces that are an iconic fixture of the Wachau wine region. During harvest Mittelbach sees that the grapes are sorted meticulously to remove any with botrytis on them. He then ferments and ages only in stainless steel to develop focused and intense wines. When importer Klaus Wittauer first tasted this wine, it was sitting in tank #26.

"I want a lot of T26," he said, and the name stuck.
