Unfiltered Pilsner-style Lager
Waterford, VA’s Wheatland Spring Farm & Brewery takes their lagers seriously, and they should. They do them well, engaged in what craft brewers excel at — exploring what changes you can get from tweaking standard recipes.
Wheatland Spring describes the Found Artifacts as “[a] time-capsule in a glass, reflecting both rustic tradition and elegant modernity.” After tasting it, we totally get that.
The first beer that Wheatland Spring offered, the centerpiece of this unfiltered Pilsner is the type of Pilsner malt Wheatland Spring uses. They snag this malt from a North Carolina malthouse which has “delicately” malted their grains. After fermentation and a happy dose of German Noble Hops, Wheatland Spring lagers this beer for eight weeks before letting it into the wild.
(As an added bonus, this batch was canned just this past week! So, it’s how we described ourselves in the 90s — super-fresh!)
The Found Artifacts looks pretty clear for an unfiltered Pilsner. So, don’t expect a hazy experience. Now, that’s the closest you’ll get here to disappointment from unmet expectations. After a pleasantly surprising sweetness on the nose, the Found Artifacts’ malt character stands out as richer and more complex than you usually find in a Pilsner.
You never thought a Pilsner could taste so much not like a Pilsner and still taste so much like a Pilsner at the same time.

New England Style IPA
You gotta’ love the names that King County Brewers Collective (KCBC) in Brooklyn comes up with. Well, we guess you don’t gotta’ love them, but they tickle our fancy. We do know that their description of this New England Style IPA is dead on!
“Glowing yellow haze (in the morning light) with fresh-n-fruity flavors of ripe mango, candied lime and juicy passion fruit, alongside a light layer of soft pine. Heavily hopped (in the middle of the night) with one of our all-time favorite hop combos: Citra, Motueka and Mosaic.”
This IPA is really light-bodied, and with the lime-and-pine leaning nature of the hops, on first sip, we thought it was little thin. The more we drank it, however, the more we started to appreciate how deeply saturated with hops it is. KCBC gives you a full dose of what they call “one of our all-time favorite hop combos.”
“What’s in a name?” says Juliet. “What’s in this beer?” says us.
