David Keuhner has spent a career in the restaurant and food industry. His path changed, however, on September 11, 2001 when his flight home was called down, and he was stuck in Nashville with no way, for hours, to contact his D.C. family to see if they were okay and to tell them that he was safe. That downed flight, by the way, Keuhner had switched to at the last minute. His original flight was on a plane that had just crashed into the Pentagon.
Since then, Keuhner started thinking about the importance of families and about giving back to the community. One result of those thoughts is One Family Brewing Company, based in Lovettesville, VA — a brewery that is dedicated to putting out tasty beer (with a delightful “Dad” sense of humor — your “twinkle in the eye” funny dad, not your groaning, corny “Dad joke” dad) and is dedicated to helping families, especially military families.
One Family Brewing works with the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation to construct memorial monuments to Gold Star Families. Also, in 2020, Keuhner created One Family Gives, a non-profit organization that exists to help families, any family, in need.
In 2019, Keuhner purchased 27 acres in Lovettsville with an eye to build One Family’s farm brewery and farm-to-table restaurant. While farm and brewery construction is underway. Meanwhile, we have their beers, like this West Coast Style IPA, The Fallen.
Originally brewed in collaboration with Emmaus, PA’s Funk Brewing Company, the Fallen is a modern West Coast Style IPA bittered with a combination of Amarillo, Centennial, Azzacca, and Columbus hops. It’s an IPA throwback with just a few tropical notes around the edges — a love letter to the hop heads who remember what it was like to worship the Pacific Northwest American hop. Proceeds from this beer go to the Woody Williams Foundation. In honor of Memorial Day, this Gold Star Family centered IPA is our Beer of the Week.
