Czech Style Pilsner

Richmond’s Väsen Brewing Company’s tagline for this Czech-style Pilsner is, “Our take on a classic Czech/Bohemian Pilsner utilizing the Saaz Noble Hop.” Okay … but while Saaz is unarguably the solid way to go if you’re making a legit traditional version of Bohemia’s most famous lager, we think what distinguishes Väsen’s Boho Pils is the character of its malt.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we did a very traditional Czech and German Pilsner tasting at our Thursday Beer Tasting, thus we’ve had this style fresh on our minds. So yes, Väsen gets out of those Saaz hops the lovely signature grassiness that you expect. On top of that though, the Boho Pilsner packs a little more of a flavor punch than the traditional Czech Pilser. We could be wrong, but we imagine that’s something to do with how they’ve managed their malt bill. Whatever the reason, the Boho’s got a bit more body, a little more heft.

Don’t get us wrong, we’re down with it. Väsen hasn’t blown the balance or lost the refreshing nature you want. They’ve just given you a slightly richer Pilsner throw down — something that can, on one hand, work to blow away the heat at your cookout and, on the other hand, can help you settle into your chair at the end of the day.

Väsen, why are you so consistently good to us?
