Wednesday Night Beer Tasting: Quebec Beers from Unibroue Brewery

  • Market Street Wine 311 East Market Street Charlottesville United States (map)

Five Reasons to do a Quebec Beer Tasting!

  1. The Quebecois take their beer very seriously. When Canada had their own experience with prohibition (Did you know that Canada had their own prohibition?), most of the country diddled around for a few years before ditching it totally. In Quebec, however, Prohibition didn't even last out a full year.

  2. Quebec is the home of Chambly, a southern suburb of Montreal on the west shore of the Richelieu River and on the south bank of the Basin de Chambly. Chambly is the home of Unibroue.

  3. Unibroue, in 1990, became the first North American brewery to use Trappist brewing methods, thus becoming the first brewery on this continent to produce abbey ales (Trappist style beers not made by actual Trappist monks). The pioneered Belgian brewing styles in this hemisphere!

  4. They've just put out a new version of their saison which is a collaboration with thrash metal band, Megadeth. (That's right. Unibroue reached out and asked Megadeth what kind of beer they wanted, and they said, "maybe a tasty saison.")

  5. The saison and all their other beers are good! They even have a beer called "Terrible" ... and it's good!
