Juan Jesus is a native of Tenerife and a fourth generation grower there. He is also a professor of viticulture and enology. In the vineyards, he and his wife Elena Batista have focused on the preservation of indigenous grape varieties. They have worked, along with others, to identify and preserve 80 varieties native to the Canary Islands. The grapes for this blend are all harvested and vinified separately and the result is an aromatic wine with pretty stone and tropical fruits and the “smoky” quality the volcanic solid of the Canary Islands are known for. Organic and biodynamic.
Domaine De La Combe Au Mas Rigaou Ventoux
Regularly $26.99/On sale for $24.29
(80% Grenache, 20% Carignan)
Domaine De La Combe Au Mas is located in the appellation of Ventoux, in the southern Rhône Valley. Thomas Ayoun and Marie-Sophie Jullien started the estate in 2019 with 10 hectares of vines planted between 980 - 1300 feet above sea level. The name of the wine we are featuring this week is “Rigaou” meaning robin, which indicates a little pale red wine. The Grenche is destemmed for a short 6 day maceration and the Carignan undergoes carbonic maceration.
Native yeasts are used in the fermentation and the wine ages in centuries old 2000-4000L terracotta Amphorae. Organic, biodynamic, polyculture farming, and the minimum use of sulphur at bottling. This wine offers tremendous value. It is a great chance to experience the effect of amphorae aging at an approachable price.
